To initiate a community mental health and development approach the programme in Orissa started in the year 2008 April with 9 implementing partners in pockets of 7 districts (Sambalpur, Khurda, Bhawanipatna, Puri, Sonepur, Cuttack, Boudh). Out of 9 partners, one partner is primarily responsible for state level advocacy where as other 8 partners are responsible for implementation as well as district level advocacy. By December 2009, the programme covers 924 villages of 41 blocks of 9 districts of the state such as Sambalpur, Khurda, Kalahandi, Puri, Sonepur, Cuttack, Jajpur, Dhenkanal and Boudh.

  • All PLWMIs are followed up at their door step and counseled
  • 1436 Individual files of PLWMIs being updated every month
  • Computerized database software is developed and used for keeping record of all people living with mental illness
Besides the numbers above, there are more positive changes that happened within community
  • Psychiatric services with government are pressurized to act efficiently and accessed by the people living with mental illness
  • In the absence of psychiatric services are made available after mobilized committed private practitioners
  • Community is getting sensitized and destigmatized towards mental illness as it has started accepting people living with mental illness
  • There is rise is self-identification of mental illness as people can identify the signs and symptoms by themselves
  • Women will mental illness after getting stabilized have been reintegrated into their families or got married
  • people living with mental illness are now part of Self Help Groups along with other people
  • RTI Act 2005 used to access information to do advocacy for implementation of DMHP (District Mental Health Programme) by state governments
