Accessing Rights and Support for Mental Health

Government policies and welfare schemes play a crucial role in ensuring the rights, inclusion, and well-being of persons with mental illness (PWMI) and their caregivers. Various national and state-level programs provide financial aid, healthcare services, rehabilitation support, and social security benefits. Understanding these policies can help individuals and families access the necessary resources for treatment, recovery, and social integration.

National Mental Health Policy 2014 (NMHP)

The National Mental Health Policy aims to bridge treatment gaps and enhance mental health services nationwide. It focuses on promotion, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, ensuring care within a rights-based framework. The policy prioritizes reducing stigma, improving access, and strengthening community-based interventions.

District Mental Health Program (DMHP)

The DMHP was established to provide decentralized, community-based mental health services. Expanding from just a few districts to over 100, it ensures early detection, treatment, and rehabilitation. The program also focuses on mental health awareness, capacity building, and integrating mental health into general healthcare services.

Mental Health Care
Act 2017

The Mental Health Care Act protects the rights of individuals with mental illnesses, ensuring their dignity and access to proper care. It mandates free treatment for those below the poverty line, emphasizes informed consent, and sets up mental health review boards to uphold rights. This Act replaces outdated laws and aligns with global mental health standards.

National Mental Health Survey of India, 2015 – 16

The NMHS, conducted by NIMHANS and commissioned by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, assessed the burden of mental health disorders across 12 states. It highlighted treatment gaps, healthcare access, and the impact of mental illnesses, providing key insights to strengthen India’s mental health programs.
